Ghisallo Cycling Initiative: All Ages, All Abilities, All Welcome

At Outride, we believe bicycles can be powerful tools for improving brain health, well-being, and connection at every stage of life. Through our Community Impact Grant program, Outride supports nonprofit organizations and school programs that are using cycling to create meaningful change in their communities. These grants help organizations expand access to biking, deliver innovative programming, and create welcoming opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to experience the benefits of riding.

One organization bringing that mission to life in a uniquely inspiring way is Ghisallo Cycling Initiative, based in Austin and San Antonio, Texas. Since 2011, Ghisallo has been helping people become comfortable, confident lifelong riders through bicycle education, exploration, and community-building programs designed for all ages and abilities. Their work spans youth programming, adult cycling education, adaptive cycling opportunities, and large-scale community events that celebrate active transportation and outdoor recreation.

Golden Rollers: Cycling That Connects Generations

Among Ghisallo's many programs, Golden Rollers stands out as one of the most innovative efforts helping older adults stay active, connected, and engaged through cycling.

Golden Rollers creates opportunities for adults 50+ and adaptive riders to experience the joy of riding in a safe, welcoming environment. The program partners closely with recreation centers and senior centers, meeting participants where they are and creating accessibility through adaptive equipment – recumbent trikes!

For many riders, Golden Rollers is about much more than exercise. Weekly rides blend dedicated bike paths and quiet neighborhood streets, creating opportunities to explore murals, bridges, libraries, parks, coffee shops, and other locales. The rides are intentionally social and destination-focused, helping participants discover parts of their communities they may never have experienced by bike.

The impact can be seen across generations. Programs like Golden Rollers demonstrate that bicycles are not just for children or athletes. They are tools for independence, mobility, social connection, and lifelong well-being.

“This is such a fun and informative program! I cannot speak highly enough of the leaders. They are super friendly and encouraging. It gives us a chance to commune, learn about biking and parts of Austin we’ve never seen. It is a great way for seniors to explore, laugh, engage and get healthier!”  - Holly C., Golden Rollers Participant, Age 73

Research continues to show that physical activity, outdoor recreation, and social connection are all important contributors to brain health. Golden Rollers brings those benefits together, creating a regular opportunity for riders to move their bodies, connect with peers, and build confidence in navigating their communities.

Outride’s Ride for Life: The Impact of Cycling on Older Adult Well-Being” research brief highlights that regular cycling can support cognitive function, emotional well-being, physical health, independence, and social connectedness as people age. For many older adults, cycling provides more than exercise. It creates opportunities to maintain mobility, explore their communities, build relationships, and engage in meaningful activities that contribute to a higher quality of life. Programs like Golden Rollers bring these benefits to life, offering a welcoming environment where older adults can stay active, connected, and confident while experiencing the joy and freedom of riding.

Welcoming Riders of All Abilities

One of the most unique aspects of Golden Rollers is its inclusive approach to adaptive cycling.

Alongside older adults, Ghisallo supports participants with diverse mobility and accessibility needs through adaptive bicycles and recumbent trikes. Programs like the organization's ‘City Cyclist’ and ‘Trike Club’ welcomes riders who may have mobility challenges or developmental differences that make traditional bicycles less accessible.

For some participants, predictable routes and familiar routines help build confidence. For others, adaptive equipment opens the door to independent mobility and exploration. Survivors of stroke and cancer, riders with Parkinson’s, former athletes with mobility issues, and folks who may not have had the opportunity to learn to ride at an early age. Everyone has an opportunity to ride with Ghisallo. With each ride, the focus remains the same: creating an environment where everyone can experience the freedom and joy of cycling.

Each program location develops its own tight-knit community, often centered around a core group of riders who return year after year while regularly welcoming newcomers. These relationships foster a strong sense of belonging, turning weekly rides into something participants genuinely look forward to.

Growing a Lifelong Cycling Culture Through Learning And Community

While Golden Rollers focuses on older adults and adaptive riders, it is just one part of Ghisallo's broader vision of creating lifelong cyclists.

The organization also operates youth programming through its Cycle Academy, offering after-school bike clubs, in-school education, safety clinics, and learn-to-ride opportunities that help young people gain confidence and independence on wheels. Since its founding, Ghisallo Cycling Initiative has served thousands of youth each year through hands-on bicycle education and encouragement programs designed to make riding safe, accessible, and fun.Together, these programs create a continuum of support that helps people build a relationship with cycling throughout their lives, from childhood through older adulthood.

As fall programming ramps up across schools, recreation centers and community spaces, Ghisallo is also preparing for its signature event, Cyclovia ATX, on November 7, 2026! Held in Austin's Windsor Park Neighborhood, this car-free celebration brings together residents of all ages and abilities for bike activities, a community bike parade, live entertainment, and family-friendly fun, while showcasing the power of active transportation to connect communities.

Supporting Community-Led Impact

Organizations like Ghisallo show what is possible when communities are empowered to create their own pathways to health, connection, and well-being.

“Growing up I saw firsthand the power of building community through the outdoors – my mother coordinated all of the activities for our local Council on Aging, everything from walking clubs to qi gong classes. She continues to be an avid e-biker, explorer, and honorary Golden Roller at the tender age of 76. I’m proud to carry on that tradition at Ghisallo, helping riders of all ages build a lifelong passion for cycling and seek out wonderment in the urban wilds.” - Derek Hansen, Ghisallo Cycling Initiative Program Director (Austin)

Through programs like Golden Rollers and the Ghisallo’s Cycle Academy, both children and adults are gaining confidence, discovering new ways to navigate their cities, and finding meaningful opportunities to stay active and socially connected through the bicycle. Ghisallo is continuing to expand access to cycling and ensuring that more people can experience the benefits bikes bring to brain health, mobility, and quality of life. Because no matter your age, ability, or experience level, it's never too late to discover where a bicycle can take you.
