Safe Routes to School
In 2005, a movement known as Safe Routes to School was established to help make it safer and easier for students to walk and bike to school. Since its establishment in 2005, the first federally funded Safe Routes to School program has evolved and undergone legislative and policy transformations from its creation in 2005, Congresses merging 3 previous programs together to create Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) in 2012, TAP’s 5-year extension in 2015 to extend throughout 2020 and so on. Though there have been policy shifts, Safe Routes for Schools is eligible by all 50 states for funding that communities can use to construct new bicycle lanes, pathways, and sidewalks, as well as launch Safe Routes to School education, promotion, and enforce campaigns under the current transportation bill.
