2023 Outride Summit Speakers
Simon Rosenbaum, PhD
Simon Rosenbaum, PhD is Scientia Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health, Discipline of Psychiatry and Mental Health, UNSW Sydney. Simon’s research focuses on physical activity and mental illness with a focus on populations exposed to trauma. Simon has published >250 peer-reviewed publications and co-edited a textbook on exercise and mental illness. He is the President of the Australasian Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and co-chair of the Olympic Refuge Foundation’s Think Tank on sport and displacement settings.
LUKE BASHFORD, PhD
Dr. Luke Bashford is a neuroscientist and cyclist. His research interests and work with Outride seek to improve social, emotional, and mental wellbeing by further understanding the changes in the brain caused by cycling and spending time in nature.
Stefan LöNNGREN
Stefan Lönngren has spent his life on two wheels and has years of experience working with people with neurodevelopmental disabilities. He's worked as a project manager for the Swedish government-funded project, Trail Cycling for Children and Young People with ADHD and Autism. Stefan believes in the power of creating conditions that allow trail cycling to become a regular activity for all, and recognizes the power of such programs to support public health and inclusion.
Jonas Willén, PhD
Jonas Willén, PhD has a background in health and technology and is the program director of the KTH Royal Institute of Technology Masters Program in Sports Technology in Sweden.
Christine Fox, PhD
Christine Fox, PhD is the MTB Health Programmes Manager for Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland. She is convinced she has the best job in the world and is passionate about getting as many folk as possible outdoors, on bikes of all kinds, and into nature. Christine has a Ph.D. in environmental sciences, has worked in education for rather longer than she would like to admit to, and would like to run a 50 miler before she hits 50 years old. She has just rediscovered roller skating.
RICK HOLT, MS
Rick Holt is the co-founder of the Early Childhood Mobility Coalition which is focused on mobility of children eight and younger, a safe streets advocate, and a League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructor. He has completed research on children's physical activity and traffic gardens, and is currently focused on the benefits of children's play, intergenerational mobility, and kids on balance bikes. Rick is a grandparent who enjoys getting outdoors on bikes with his granddaughters, and is working to bring traffic gardens and bike buses to the Cincinnati, OH, area.
ESTHER WALKER, PhD
Esther Walker, PhD is the Research Program Manager at Outride. She oversees Outride’s applied research and evaluation with schools and organizations across the United States and collaborates with a wide range of researchers and community organizations to better understand how cycling can help youth, and their communities, become both happier and healthier. Esther is also passionate about sharing stories through data and helps to equip programs with educational tools and reports that demonstrate impact.
Starla Murillo
Starla Murillo is an incoming senior at University of Redlands where she is studying Biology. This summer she has been working under Dr. Sean M. Wilson at Loma Linda University School of Medicine through the University of Redland’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program. After graduation Starla hopes to matriculate to medical school.
Fletcher Dementyev
Fletcher Dementyev is a rising sophomore at Columbia University. He has spent the past two years working under Dr. Sean M. Wilson at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine through the ABC (Apprenticeship Bridge to College) and UTP (Undergraduate Training Program) research fellowships. Fletcher’s research interests include health equity, lifestyle medicine, and healthcare management.
Tristan Wallhead, PhD
Tristan Wallhead, PhD is a Professor of Physical Education Teacher Education in the Division of Kinesiology and Health at the University of Wyoming. He conducts research on the effects of instructional models, such as Sport Education on student motivation to participate in physical education and the connection to extra-curricular physical activity opportunities. He currently serves as the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the College of Health Sciences and as the Vice President of the international physical education organization (AIESEP).
